Recently I volunteered at an elementary school to help out with a little fair they were having. When I was working at the fair, I noticed that a large portion of the children were obese. I’m not talking about a little chubby; I’m talking about movement restricting obesity. I saw a kid that was unable to walk a few feet without having to breathing heavily. The food that was available at the fair was pizza, candy, popcorn and chips! I’m not saying that a little junk food here and there is bad, but these children are exposed to these foods every single day.
mmm…..
How is someone going to learn to throw a football with a baseball? How would a child learn good eating habits with junk around him? I worked the popcorn machine at the fair where it was 25 cents for a nice little bag of popcorn. Not too bad right? The lady poured butter and seasoning on the popcorn every time I loaded the machine. I felt bad giving the popcorn to the kids. When I was in elementary school, the options for lunch were pizza, hamburger, or hotdog with some fries on the side. I’m sure a majority of Americans had the same. America really needs to step up and make some changes to the school nutrition and food in general. Here are some tips on improving your families eating habits.

Small Change
Don’t change everything in your family’s current diet at once. This can only spell disaster because they going to cave in after a couple days. Don’t dump all of the chips in the house because you or your family WILL find chips if needed. Replace the chips with baked ones instead.
Smaller Portions
Americans tend to be over weight because we do it big. Big Macs, King size, Super Gulp, etc. You go to McDonalds and you can get a small, medium, large, or supersize! McDonalds removed their supersize a while ago because of the movie SuperSizeMe. People will eat what is put in front of them. If you put a huge plate of food in front of you, your going to eat as much as you can to finish it. Put less on your dinner plate and you will eat less. If you go out to eat, try to eat half and save the rest for later.
Don’t Skip Meals
Skipping meals will cause over eating because of the fact that you are so hungry. When you skip meals, you are going to eat what ever you can to satisfy it and that does not always end well nutrition wise. Set a basic outline as to when you are going to eat and carry some MRP’s (Meal Replacements). Look for lower sugar protein bars because 35g of sugar isn’t going to go well with your waist. Be careful though because if the bar is high in sugar alcohol, your stomach may not digest it well and you will walk around with gas all day and that is not the most pleasant thing to have.
Eat Often
Eating often will keep your metabolic fire burning. Aim for five to six meals a day if you are able to. Keep a larger portion of your calories in the morning and a smaller part in the evening because you are more active in the morning then night. It’ll give your body time to burn those calories.
Eat Without Distractions
Avoid eating while watching television, going on the computer, driving, etc. This will allow you to sense when you are full and avoid nonstop eating. Remember that pint of Ben and Jerry’s you downed while watching Sex in the City?
